Florida files lawsuit over Vioxx

Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum has filed a lawsuit accusing Merck & Co. of deceptively marketing the withdrawn painkiller Vioxx. In the lawsuit, McCollum alleges that the drugmaker used strategic marketing, incentives and intimidation to convince doctors and the public that Vioxx was safe. Florida is the ninth state to file a lawsuit against Merck over Vioxx. The lawsuit alleges that “Merck’s costly promotional campaign was intended to convince purchasers that the drug was not only safe, but that they should demand it from their healthcare professionals for pain treatment,” according to a statement from the attorney general.
