Family suspects child died as a result of heparin overdose
A Medical Center is investigating after a child wrongfully died in their care following an organ transplant, and the cause of death may be related to an accidental (i.e. hospital negligence) overdose of heparin, a blood thinner. The provider is “investigating” the death in what could be a claim for medical malpractice for hospital negligence. 98,000 persons die every year as a result of preventable medical errors (or two 727 planes crashing every day for a year).
According to Action 3 news, the patient was at the hospital for a multi-organ transplant. After the procedure, the patient returned to the hospital with an infection, which caused the patient’s kidneys to shut down. The patient was a 23 month old girl. She died as a result of the infection.
It is widely known that heparin in too high a dose can cause immediate problems and harm in a patient. The dosage could lead to internal bleeding, which could be life threatening to anyone, especially an infant.
There are suspicions the medical malpractice arose because of a failure to check an IV pump.
Realizing its potential exposure, the hospital has arranged for travel for the family and funeral expenses. The hospital is also sharing information with other hospitals on what they are trying to do to prevent a preventable death.
