Too many die and too much money spent caring for infections caused by hospital negligence
Although not directly focused on the states of Tennessee, Mississippi or Arkansas, medical statistics still show a staggering 48,000 people were killed as a result of pneumonia and blood-borne infections. The cost? An amazing $8.1 Billion. Perhaps instead of focusing on curbing damages awarded in medical malpractice suits, hospitals should try and not negligently infect their patients with disease? The savings? $8.1 Billion per year.
Patients who developed sepsis after surgery had to stay in the hospital on average nearly 11 days extra, at a cost of $32,900 per patient, they found. And just under 20 percent of them died. Pneumonia patients stayed an extra 14 days after surgery, at a cost of $46,400 and more than 11 percent of them died, the researchers found. These figures are shocking and appalling, and carryover into hospitals in Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas.
