Memphis Tennessee Medical Malpractice Lawyer Reports July Worst Month for Fatal Hospital Errors

According to ABC News, researchers at the University of California at San Diego have found that the rate of medication errors increase in July at teaching hospitals throughout the country, likely because of the arrival of new medical residents who are at the start of their medical, clinical training.  This factor has been dubbed the “July Effect,” and the study shows a 10% increase in medication errors when there are changes in personnel in July.

An experienced physician cited in the article was not surprised by the study’s findings, reasoning that the mistakes are attributable to the new residents being inexperienced in caring for patients and being engrossed in a new system and new policies and procedures. New residents are not used to long hours, lack of sleep and the stresses of being “on the job.” Two former sources, one from the Boston Globe (October 2009) and one from the Mayo Clinic, agree that sleep-deprived residents are more likely to perform a medical error.
