The improper handling of the birthing process, including shoulder dystocia during a vaginal delivery, can result in permanent injury to your child. While most brachial plexus cases resolve within six months of birth, approximately ten percent (10%) of all such cases are permanent and could result in life-changing events for your child.
The brachial plexus is a network of nerves that begin the upper spine and make their way through the neck, shoulder and arm toward the hand. Damage to these nerves could cause loss of sensation to the arm or even paralysis. The most serious type of brachial plexus injury is avlusion, when the nerve roots are torn out of the spine. Other injuries include (1) rupture, when the nervers are tort but remain attached to the spine; (2) neruoma, where the torn nerve heals but with the formation of scar tissue, and (3) neuropraxia, when the nerve is stretched but not actually torn. We accept cases for all four types of injuries.
The predominant cause is following shoulder dystocia during the birthing process, when the baby’s anterior shoulder is trapped behind the mother’s public bone, or when the baby’s posterior shoulder is trapped int he hollow of mother’s tailbone.
