Accutane® Linked to Inflammatory Bowel Disease and More

If you have been diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Rectal Bleeding or more, and have been or were previously taking the prescription drug Accutane®, you may be entitled to cash compensation. Call Ed Wallis today at (901) 5270-2125 or FILL OUT THE FORM TO THE RIGHT FOR A FREE CASE EVALUATION.

The Medication

Accutane (isotretinoin) is used to treat acne, although it is usually prescribed by a dermatologist to treat severe acne.

History of Problems

In 2005 the maker of Accutane, Roche Pharmaceuticals, updated the label to warn patients and healthcare professionals of an increased risk of suicide associated with the medication. The problems did not stop there.

In 2007 Accutane underwent another label revision to inform patients that the drug been shown to cause an increased risk of birth defects and miscarriage when taken by pregnant women. The FDA has also warned patients to never purchase Accutane over the internet as this method of procurement bypasses important procedures that ensure the drug is being taken safely.

Current Problem

Recently, Accutane was linked to gastrointestinal diseases, including the following:

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

Crohn’s Disease

Ulcerative Colitis

Rectal Bleeding

Research has shown that patients taking Accutane are at an increased risk of developing IBD. A 2006 article published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology suggested that patients should be made aware of the increased risk. Irritable Bowel Disease includes serious and extremely painful conditions like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Since Accutane’s approval in 1982 there have been numerous reports of the presciption acne medication being linked to IBD.

Between 1997 and 2002 (according to studies), over 80 suspected cases of IBD were reported by users of Accutane. Accutane usage was considered to be either the “highly probable” or “probable” cause for over 60 of the 80 patients.

Crohn’s Disease

Crohn’s Disease was named after the first doctor who wrote about the illness in a 1932 clinical publication, Burrill B. Crohn. This disease affects the bowels and can cause numerous, painful problems in the lower abdomen. It is sometimes referred to as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). There are reports of Accutane being linked to Crohn’s Disease.

Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis is a disease that causes inflammation and sores in the lining of the rectum and colon. These sores (ulcers) can start to form where inflammation has killed the cells that usually line the colon, then bleed and produce pus. Inflammation in the colon also causes the colon to empty frequently, causing diarrhea. Many people who experience ulcerative colitis experience abdominal pain, cramping, tenesmus, and bleeding. Accutane may be the cause of this condition.

Memphis, Tennessee attorneys to offer help to those suffering from tardive dyskinesia

Attorneys Tim Edwards and Ed Wallis are offering FREE case evaluations to anyone who has taken the prescription drug Reglan (generic name Metoclopramide) and has sustained injuries, including being diagnosed with tardive dyskinesia. In fact, studies have linked long-term use of the drug Reglan to the development of tardive dyskinsesia. Tardive Dyskinesia is a serious and often permanent neurological disorder characterized by involuntary, repetitive movements in the face and extremities.

Usually prescribed to treat gastrointestinal disorders (such as acid reflux or heartburn), Reglan has been reported to have caused thousands of injuries across the globe. Regardless of whether taken in tablet, oral solution or injection, the medicine can cause injury.

Did you know that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) only approved Reglan for short-term use? This has not stopped physicians from prescribing the medication for a year or more. As a result of the complications and complaints by so many, the FDA issued a black box warning for the drug in February 2009. A “black box warning” is the FDA’s strongest warning, and was issued for Reglan and other metoclopramide-containing drugs due to the risk of tardive dyskinesia in people who take the drug in high doses or for a long period of time.

IF YOU HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH TARDIVE DYSKINESIA AND HAVE BEEN TAKING REGLAN, PLEASE CONTACT US TODAY FOR A FREE CASE EVALUATION.

Although located in Tennessee, we are prepared to assist you with your claim no matter where you are located.

If You Need Help

The Birth Control Drug Yaz (Yasmin) Increases Risk of Blood Clots

Yaz/Yasmin / Ocella (drosperinone & ethinyl estradiol) is a hormonal contraceptive administered orally to prevent pregnancy. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also approved the drug for treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder and moderate acne. The drug brings with it, however, an increased risk of potentially deadly blood clots. These clots pose a potentially life threatening risk because they can travel through the body’s circulatory system and cause severe damage to the brain, heart and lungs, leading to heart attack, stroke and pulmonary embolism. Clearly, the drug could cause death.

Research has also confirmed the Yaz / Yasmin / Ocella can cause hyperkalemia, an elevated level of potassium in the blood. In severe cases, hyperkalemia can cause cardiac artythmia and sudden death.

The drug’s manufacturer, Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals Inc., has twice received warning letters from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for failing to warn consumers of the dangers associated with the drug. In October 2008, the FDA sent Bayer a warning letter in response to television commercials promoting Yaz. The commercials, according to the letter, violated the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act by minimizing the “serious risks associated with use of the drug.” Additionally, the commercials suggested Yaz could be used to treat symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome, a treatment for which the drug was not granted approval by the FDA. In March 2009, the FDA again wrote to Bayer concerning advertisements that failed to warn consumers of dangers associated with Yaz / Yasmin / Ocella.

Bayer AG, Germany’s largest drugmaker, was accused in a lawsuit of ignoring health risks of the contraceptive Yaz and advertising the drug as safe to boost sales. The Yasmin family of birth-control pills, known as Yaz and Yasmin, carries a four times increased risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism compared with other contraceptives, according to the suit, filed today in St. Catharines, Ontario, by two women. They seek class-action, or group, status to represent all women who used the drugs.

The Drug

Levaquin® (Levofloxacin) is member of the class of antibiotic medications called flouroquinolones. Levaquin® is most commonly used to treat lung, sinus, skin, and urinary tract infections caused by certain types of bacteria. Over the last several months Levaquin® has come under fire over adverse reactions linked to the medication. Patients taking Levaquin® have suffered from tendon pain, tendinitis, and tendon ruptures that have now been directly tied to the use of Levaquin®.

Most of the tendon related injuries reported by Levaquin® users have been associated with the shoulder rotator cuff tendons and the Achilles tendon located in the back of the foot. These injuries can be extremely painful and in many cases require surgical repair of the torn or damages tendon. Levaquin® users have also reported numerous other side effects including shortness of breath and swelling of the neck and face.

FDA “Black Box” Warning

On July 8, 2008 the FDA issued it strongest waning, a “Black Box” warning, for Levaquin® and other flouroquinolone medications for an increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture. The decision to add the “Black Box” warning to the label of Levaquin® was based on the FDA’s investigation of hundreds of reports of tendon injuries suffered by users of Levaquin® and other similar antibiotics.

Other Levaquin® Related Injuries and Side Effects

In addition to tendon pain, tendinitis, and ruptured or torn tendons Levaquin® users have also reported the following injuries and serious side effects:

dizziness, fainting, fast or pounding heartbeat;

sudden pain or swelling near your joints (especially in your arm or ankle);

diarrhea that is watery or bloody;

confusion, hallucinations, depression, unusual thoughts or behavior;

seizure (convulsions);

pale or yellowed skin, dark colored urine, fever, weakness;

urinating less than usual or not at all;

easy bruising or bleeding;

numbness, burning, pain, or tingly feeling in your hands or feet;

fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash; or

the first sign of any skin rash, no matter how mild.

Less serious Levaquin® side effects may include:

nausea, diarrhea, constipation;

feeling restless, anxious, or depressed;

headache, dizziness;

muscle pain;

sleep problems (insomnia or nightmares);

vaginal itching or discharge; or

mild skin itching.

Statutes of limitation, which are deadlines set by state law, regulate the filing of lawsuits, and they vary from state to state.

Seroquel may cause side effects — you may be entitled to compensation.

Seroquel Side Effects: Tardive Dyskinesia

Tardive Dyskinesia is a serious side effect of Seroquel. Tardive Dyskinesia is a neurological disorder that damages the system that processes neurotransmitter dopamine. Dopamine affects brain processes that control movement, emotional response, and the ability to experience pleasure and pain. Evidence shows that Tardive Dyskinesia is a side effect of neuroleptic drugs. Seroquel, a neuroleptic drug, may cause Tardive Dyskinesia by blocking and reducing the dopamine’s effect on the brain.

Tardive Dyskinesia is characterized by sudden, repetitive, and uncontrolled movement. Tardive Dyskinesia side effects may include:

tongue protrusion

lip smacking

lip puckering and pursing

rapid eye blinking

Seroquel Side Effects: Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome

Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS) is a life-threatening neurological disorder. NMS is caused by decreased dopamine levels in the brain. NMS has only been reported in patients taking antipsychotic drugs. Experts believe that NMS is a serious side effect of Seroquel, an antipsychotic drug, because Seroquel reduces the brain’s dopamine level.

Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome’s side effects may include:

Fever

Muscular rigidity

Altered mental status

Autonomic dysfunction

Seroquel Side Effects: Birth Defects / Unwarranted Pregnancies

Scientists are unsure if birth defects are a side effect of Seroquel use because pregnant women were not tested during clinical trials. In animal studies, scientists discovered that Seroquel is toxic to developing fetuses. Therefore, pregnant women are advised to speak with their doctors before using Seroquel. Government regulatory experts advise pregnant women to take Seroquel only if the benefits outweigh the risks.

Seroquel use places women at an increased risk for unwanted pregnancies. Experts realized an increased fertility rate in women taking second generation (or atypical) antipsychotic medications compared to women taking first generation. The FDA and AstraZeneca, Seroquel’s manufacturer, were criticized for not warning women about the increased fertility risk.

Tim Edwards and Ed Wallis represent patients (or their loved ones) who took Seroquel and have developed side effects including diabetes, Tardive Dyskinesia, Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome or Birth Defects / Unwarranted Pregnancies.
