The Medication
Avandia, manufactured by the pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, was first sold in 1999 to help those with type II diabetes. The drug’s job was to increase their insulin levels by increasing the sensitivity of a diabetes patient’s insulin receptors, thereby minimizing the shortfall of this crucial substance in any internal system.
For a period of several years, Avandia generated billions of dollars of revenue annually, and initial reports of its progress were quite positive. However, reports began to surface of serious side effects that were associated with the use of Avandia, and eventually the FDA stepped in and issued a public safety alert warning of the potential to develop these serious and sometimes fatal side effects.
Avandia Side Effects
The specific problem with Avandia is that it tended to lead to the development of heart-related complications in certain patients, and these heart problems included:
- Heart attack
- Congestive heart failure
- Stroke
- Severe allergic reactions
- Death
More investigation revealed that Avandia presented particularly high risks for those patients with the following preexisting health problems:
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Strokes
- Congestive heart failure
- High blood pressure
- Heart attack
Symptoms
Unfortunately, the symptoms associated with Avandia side effects are quite varied in nature, and they could include:
